9/11 Memorial Concert

NY Buddhist

Following last year we held a memorial concert at the NY Buddhist church located in northwest Manhattan to commemorate the victims of the September 11th 2001 attack.
14 years have passed since then.
I went to Ground Zero in the evening on the anniversary of the attack with the other members, and the reality of it all was too much for me and I couldn’t help but cry.
There were two pools of water where the towers had been.
The names of the victims are engraved around the pools and the water flowing down into the middle of the pools looked like tears were washing away the people’s emotions. There are many national flags and flowers surrounding the site, along with many messages and two blue beams of light soared upwards towards the sky.
We prayed for the victims and bereaved families.
On the 12th we went to Central Park for a memorial performance and there were many other artists performing there too. I was surprised to see a harpist performing there too and wondered how she could carry such a large harp to the park!
After that we went to the “One World Trade Center,” which was opened on Friday, May 29th.
There is a revival plan to restructure Ground Zero which began last  November and this is the first of 7 towers which was completed.
The observatory was open in the tower and the view from 1776 feet was awesome and I felt my spirits lifted.
The 13th was the memorial concert at the Buddhist church.
This is the 70 years turning point since World War 2 and also the turning point  when the Shinran-shonin’s bronze statue was presented to the sect of jodo-shinnshu.
Before the concert, a Buddhist memorial service was held in front of the statue with all in attendance praying.
After that, we held a concert with  Masato Muto
(koto, sax, vocals) Kosei Takekoshi (composer, orchestrator, sound creator) and Chouichi Arakaki (artist from Okinawa. Eventor and peace activist)

The concept of the first half was ” Repose of Souls. And the second half was “Hope to the Future and Pray for Peace and Calm.”

I’ve also played solo violin: Schindler’s List, from the movie of the same name which was about the holocaust and I was deeply moved by it.
I wanted to relate to everybody that we all should be thankful for what we have, and for our freedom.
The second piece I played is “Hana”(flower) which was written by an Okinawan musician called Shouichi Kina.
Apparently, when he was watching the Tokyo Olympics in 1964, the games were interrupted to announce that Rhodesia had become independent from Britain.
During the closing ceremony, an athlete carried a Zambian jockey on his shoulders to the applaud of the announcer on the TV, and he shouted in a hoarse voice, “they are crying! laughing!
In the song “Hana”  “they are crying! laughing!” are in the lyrics.
I wanted to tell people through my music that skin colour doesn’t matter, we are all equal.
As John Lennon once said: ” Give Peace a Chance.”
This concert notice appeared in the newspaper “NY Cool Japan” dated 9/5.
After the memorial concert last year, we struggled to make a music album “pArfait Amour Episode II”

At this concert,we played 4 pieces of music from the album(pArfait Amour(prelude, part-1,3), SAQURA-soul/

Played 2 pieces of music (ordinAry (part-1,2)) from the album created  in 2009 which  is a concept  mourning the victims of world war Ⅱ.

And we also played new music (Michi/Road to Soul,
Soul to Call” ”HIKARI, Hope for Tomorrow” which were composed  by Mr.Muto for this concert.

I will let you know when it will be released as soon as I can.

I’m very grateful that I could play this year too.
It looks like NY is making a remarkable revival but 9/11 still remains in the people’s hearts.
We can’t do anything to change what happened, we can only pray for peace for the future and not let this fade with time.
